Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a teeth-straightening method that uses a series of custom-made aligner trays that gently guide your teeth into alignment a little at a time. The removable trays are made of a smooth, near-invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth.
The Invisalign trays are designed to be worn for at least 20-22 hours per day for optimal results. You wear each custom tray for around two weeks before switching to a new tray.
The series of trays are designed to work gradually until you reach your desired alignment. The Invisalign process can typically straighten your teeth in just 6-18 months.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign offers many benefits and is backed by over 20 years of clinical research. The trays are discrete and removable — you can easily take them out to eat or brush your teeth.
Invisalign uses smooth, comfortable plastic, unlike traditional metal braces, which use brackets and tightening wires that can poke and irritate your teeth and gums.
There’s minimal interference in your daily life, and Invisalign works for people of all ages, including children and adolescents.
How does Invisalign work?
During your first appointment, Dr. Pillai takes impressions of your teeth and digitizes them. A computerized image of your teeth is taken from these impressions, and a 3D model is then created in-office.
The 3D model helps Dr. Pillai plan how your teeth should move and create a treatment plan for you. This also allows Dr. Pillai to estimate your treatment time and show you what the results might look like at the onset.
Around every two weeks, you return to the office for your new custom trays. Each set of trays moves your teeth just a little bit more. The process continues until you’re satisfied with your teeth.
What can I expect after Invisalign treatments?
Following your treatment, you might need to wear a retainer that’s made from the same material as the aligner trays. A retainer keeps your teeth aligned following an orthodontic procedure to ensure your teeth don’t drift out of position.
You also have follow-up visits for maintenance, for dental health checkups, and to monitor your results. Dr. Pillai’s wonderful chairside manner is why patients love working with her.
