Pediatric Dentistry Q & A

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a branch of oral health care that treats children of all ages. Pediatric dentists like Dr. Pillai have special training and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth.

Your child’s baby teeth break through their gums at about six months. Your child begins losing their baby teeth between the ages of 6-7, and their permanent teeth come in after.

This rapid rate of change and growth increases your child’s risk of cavities and gum disease. Pediatric dentistry provides a safe and effective way to keep their mouth healthy.

What services does pediatric dentistry provide?

At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, Dr. Pillai offers various pediatric dentistry services, including:

Oral exams

An oral exam is a preventive screening used to check-in on your child’s oral health. During an exam, Dr. Pillai uses a circular, handheld mirror to observe your child’s teeth and gums. If she spots signs of decay or inflammation, she develops a custom treatment plan to prevent further complications.

Routine cleanings

In addition to brushing and flossing daily, your child needs a professional cleaning twice a year. During a dental cleaning, a dental hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth and underneath their gum line. Afterward, they polish and floss your child’s teeth, and if necessary, apply a fluoride treatment.

Digital X-rays

Digital oral X-rays use low doses of radiation to provide detailed images of your child’s tooth roots, jawbone, and temporomandibular joints. Digital X-rays help Dr. Pillai detect cavities, misalignments, impacted teeth, and damage to the tooth pulp.

Sealants

If your child is at risk of developing a cavity, Dr. Pillai might recommend dental sealants. Sealants are a thin layer of composite resin applied to the tops of your child’s molars and premolars. Sealants help prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride treatment

Some children have weak tooth enamel. This increases the risk of tooth decay and other potential complications. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that makes the teeth more resistant to acids from plaque and sugars in the mouth. Fluoride treatment can strengthen and preserve your child’s teeth.

How often should I schedule a pediatric dentistry appointment?

If you want to keep your child’s teeth and gums in great shape, schedule a pediatric dentistry appointment every six months.

At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, Dr. Pillai goes to great lengths to ensure children have a positive experience. She has toys on-site, a compassionate demeanor, and uses language that’s easy for kids to understand.
