Restorative Dentistry Q & A

What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry repairs damage caused by cavities, gum disease, accidents, and injuries. It utilizes oral prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges, and dental implants to improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile, as well as your chewing and biting abilities.

In addition, restorative dentistry improves your oral health. If you have missing or damaged teeth, you’re more likely to experience gum recession, tooth misalignments, and bone decay. Restorative dentistry can significantly lower your risk of these and other issues.

What are the types of restorative dentistry?

At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, Dr. Pillai offers several types of restorative dentistry, including:

Dental implants

Dental implants are posts made of titanium used to support oral prosthetics like crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures.

Dr. Pillai places them into small holes in your jaw during a quick outpatient procedure. Following treatment, your bone grows around each implant, holding them in place. That provides a sturdy foundation for your new teeth.

If you damage your dental implants, Dr. Pillai can restore them with dental bonding or replacement prosthetics.

Same-day crowns

If you damage a tooth or develop a large cavity, Dr. Pillai might recommend same-day crowns. Crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that restore your tooth to its near-original shape, size, and appearance.

Traditionally, getting a crown takes several appointments. But, Dr. Pillai has a CEREC milling machine on-site that allows for same-day restorations.

Bridges

Bridges are a type of dental restoration used to fill a space in your smile caused by a missing tooth. There are several types of dental bridges, but all contain an artificial tooth and a supportive framework. Dr. Pillai bonds the supportive framework to the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

Dentures

If you’re missing some or all of your teeth but don’t want dental implants, consider dentures. Dentures are removable oral prosthetics made of acrylic, metal, and nylon. Partial dentures have a wireframe that snaps into place around your existing teeth. Complete dentures contain a full set of teeth and replace your upper or lower arch.

Will restorative dentistry benefit me?

Only a qualified dentist like Dr. Pillai can determine if restorative dentistry will benefit you. Following an oral exam, a review of your oral health history, and a discussion of your goals for treatment, she can make recommendations and develop a treatment plan that aligns with your needs.

Dr. Pillai loves working with her patients to achieve healthy, happy smiles, and she has a wonderful chairside manner.
